Agroforestry with Aquaculture

Under Indian conditions the demand for green fodder to feed our livestock is high and it is time to convert the waste lands and marshy lands for fodder cultivation to tide over the situation. Many proven models such as Agrisiliviculture, Agrisilvipasture, Hortipasture, Hortisilvipature, and Silvipasture are in vogue. Many of these systems have long incubation period for generation of income to the practicing farmers. This system along with integration of Livestock gives ready income which is yet to be followed more seriously by agriculturalist.
In and around water logged ponds and lakes you may find lot of farmers rearing ducks and allowing the birds to find their feed in these water bodies. Lakes and ponds are places where fishes are reared for our consumption and also the trash fishes creeps in as weeds. These trash fishes, crabs, tadpoles, snails, weeds,  are consumed by the ducks and lay eggs. Removal of these waste items from aqua farms provide a good environment for the fish culture to have healthy growth. The pond bunds can be used for growing banana, coconut, gooseberry, guava, spinach, vegetables, fodder trees which can support the farmers to meet the home needs as well as daily marketing of the produce if production is more. This model is referred as Aquaforestry with integration of domestic birds. This model if implemented will provide nutritional security and higher income for the inland fish growing farmers.
